A 57-year-old former South African police general has been arrested for unlawfully possessing more than 100 rounds of police-issued ammunition, Daily Maverick reports, citing the South African Police Service.
The R5 and 9mm rounds were allegedly found in July when the police's National Cold Case Unit searched his home in Centurion. Officers also took documents and electronic devices they believe are relevant to the investigation into the death of Lieutenant General Sindile Mfazi. The former general, who left the service in 2009 and has not yet been named, was due in Johannesburg Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.
Mfazi, a deputy national police commissioner, died in 2021, officially of Covid-19 complications. It was later alleged that he had been poisoned after uncovering corruption, and police are now treating his death as murder. The arrest comes amid a wider corruption scandal in the police.
