Samsung is expanding its huge chipmaking complex at Pyeongtaek, south of Seoul, to meet demand for the memory chips used in artificial intelligence systems, MIT Technology Review reports from the site.
Three plants on the site already work day and night, and a fourth is about to open. Work on a fifth, paused when memory demand slumped in 2024, has restarted as the AI boom took hold. AI processors such as Nvidia's depend on stacks of high-bandwidth memory, a market where Samsung has fallen behind its domestic rival SK Hynix, and the company expects demand to keep climbing until at least 2028.
The magazine describes thousands of construction workers on a campus roughly the size of Central Park, with heavy emphasis on safety. One safety officer said she earns 140,000 won, about $97, a day and expects the building work to keep her busy for years.
