Quebec's premier-designate, Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, has asked the Crown's representative in Quebec not to attend Wednesday's swearing-in of his new cabinet, CBC News reports.
Writing to Manon Jeannotte, the province's lieutenant-governor, the PQ leader said the King's representative would not be allowed to oversee the event under his government and repeated his aim of abolishing the monarchy in Quebec. He asked her to sign the appointment papers privately so that ministers could be sworn in without her.
The plan faces a legal challenge. Lawyer Lawrence David is seeking an emergency injunction, due to be heard on Tuesday, to suspend a 2022 law that made the oath to the King optional for members of the National Assembly. If it is granted, PQ members who refuse the oath could be barred from their seats when the legislature returns in mid-November.
