A former police officer has been found guilty of murdering his tenant, Christopher Jarvis, who disappeared from Warrnambool in south-west Victoria in 2006, the Sydney Morning Herald reports. Steven Johnson, 74, had denied the charge and blamed another man. His bail was revoked after the jury's verdict on Friday.
Prosecutors said Jarvis was attacked in his driveway, taken in his car's boot to Framlingham Forest and killed, the day before a court hearing over about $2,200 in rent that Johnson said he owed. His body has never been found, and his burnt-out car was discovered at a seaside lookout.
After the verdict, Johnson told the court he had served the state as a police officer for 15 years. Members of Jarvis's family, who wept in the public gallery, shouted at him not to speak to them.
