Six people have been arrested in Greece in an investigation into alleged attempts to fix basketball matches for betting rings at home and abroad, Balkan Insight reports, citing Greek police.
Greek media say those held include Vangelis Liolios, president of the Hellenic Basketball Federation, along with current and former referees. His lawyer denies the allegations and called the case a poorly put-together scheme by people Liolios had himself reported to the authorities.
Organised crime police carried out raids on Wednesday in Attica, Achaia and Katerini. Officers seized phones, laptops, storage devices and more than €930,000 in cash. The warrants cover alleged bribery of referees and officials and interference with match results. The suspects have been passed to prosecutors as the inquiry continues, and the federation says it is following the case.
