Chichester homeowner loses appeal over ‘overbearing’ fence on his own land

·

A Chichester homeowner has lost his appeal over a garden fence that planners said was too dominant for the surrounding estate, GB News reports.

Giles Savage put up a timber fence almost two metres high in 2025 to enclose land he owns beside his home on Gloucester Way. Chichester District Council refused retrospective planning permission, saying the land had long been kept as open green space and that the new boundary would spoil the estate's spacious feel.

The Planning Inspectorate has now dismissed his appeal. Inspector Stewart Glassar found that the estate had been deliberately designed to keep boundaries back from roads and footpaths, and that the fence felt overbearing to people walking past. A separate request for Mr Savage's costs to be paid by the council was also rejected, with the inspector ruling that the authority had not acted unreasonably.
