Wes Streeting tells households to prepare for ‘state-sponsored terrorism’

·

The defence secretary, Wes Streeting, has urged households and businesses across Britain to think about how they would cope if hostile states attacked everyday infrastructure, The Guardian reports.

Speaking on Thursday at Rheinmetall's new tank gun barrel factory in Telford, he said terms such as hybrid warfare did not convey the danger clearly and that he preferred to call it state-sponsored terrorism. He pointed to risks such as cyber-attacks that could disable payment systems or disrupt supply chains, as well as natural emergencies like floods and wildfires.

European governments have grown more vocal about suspected Russian sabotage, including a drone carrying explosives found beside a Ukrainian cargo plane at Leipzig airport in August. Streeting also said the chancellor, John Healey, would set out plans to raise defence spending to 3.5% of GDP in next year's spending review.
