Gulf states to supply France with a tenth of its diesel as Macron tours the region

·

Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain will sell France the equivalent of about 10% of its diesel consumption over the coming weeks, according to sources at the Elysee cited by The National.

The aim is to ease fuel prices, which have fed protests and public anger in France. Much of the arrangement was secured during President Emmanuel Macron's tour of the Gulf, which began on Monday in Kuwait and the UAE and continues to Bahrain and Qatar.

Saudi Arabia had already committed to 95,000 tonnes of diesel in each of October and November, while the UAE and Bahrain are expected to supply a further 100,000 tonnes between them. The sales will go through TotalEnergies, whose chief executive is travelling with Mr Macron. France and the UAE also signed preliminary agreements on energy and artificial intelligence.
