Hegseth meets Netanyahu on unannounced Israel visit as Iran war talks continue

·

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during an unannounced visit to Israel, The National reports, citing Axios and CNN.

The meeting, also attended by Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz, reportedly took place on Monday evening at Ovda air base in southern Israel, as the two countries discuss the possibility of resuming major combat operations against Iran. The Pentagon declined to comment. Mr Hegseth later posted a picture of himself with US Central Command personnel.

The visit came a day after President Trump endorsed Mr Netanyahu ahead of Israel's 27 October election. Mr Netanyahu thanked Mr Trump in a video, said the two had a job to finish, and spoke of expanding the Abraham Accords. Reports suggest the leaders have differed over the direction of the Iran war.
