King Charles III has arrived in Guyana on a two-day visit, part of a nine-day official tour of the Caribbean, CTV News reports, citing the Associated Press.
He was invited by President Irfaan Ali, who has publicly asked for an apology for Britain's role in slavery as several Caribbean leaders press for reparations. Guyana, a former British colony of about 840,000 people, was the scene of one of the region's largest slave revolts and has recently become a major offshore oil producer.
The king, who last visited in 2000 as Prince of Wales, is due to meet Ali, business owners and elected leaders of Amerindian villages. Hilary Beckles, who heads the Caribbean Reparations Commission, said recently that the region had never been better prepared to confront Britain and the monarchy over slavery.
