Update: China calls report of spy targeting Nvidia’s Jensen Huang groundless

·

China's foreign ministry has rejected a report that a suspected Chinese intelligence asset tried to get close to Nvidia's chief executive, Jensen Huang, calling it groundless speculation intended to smear Beijing, the South China Morning Post reports.

Spokesman Guo Jiakun made the comments at a regular briefing in Beijing on Friday. The New York Times reported on Thursday that US intelligence agencies had identified a Chinese businesswoman, Alice Huang, also known as Huang Le, as a suspected asset who sought a close business relationship with the Nvidia chief.

The report also referred to Megaspeed, a company that US authorities have previously scrutinised over suspicions that it helped China get around American export controls on advanced chips. Nvidia's processors are at the centre of the technology contest between Washington and Beijing.
