Police in France arrested more than 400 people on Saturday after nationwide demonstrations over school conditions, rising prices and public services ended in clashes in several cities.
The movement began last month among secondary school pupils in the poorer northern suburbs of Paris, angry about absent teachers and run-down buildings, and has since drawn in unions, pensioners and others. Hundreds of thousands of people marched. In Paris, police used teargas near Place de la République as masked groups threw projectiles, looted shops and set a lorry alight. In Marseille, protesters briefly forced their way into the town hall.
The interior minister, Laurent Nuñez, said most of those detained were adults with no link to the student protests, and that no state of emergency was planned, according to The Guardian.
