The comedian and actor Paul Whitehouse was targeted at a cash machine in Islington, north London, on Friday, his wife has said. Dr Mine Conkbayir wrote on Instagram that Whitehouse, 68, had gone out to collect medication for her when someone tried to take his bank card at a machine behind a Sainsbury's supermarket. According to her post, he resisted, recovered the card and the attacker left with nothing. She urged people to stay alert when out and about and said her husband had encouraged her to share what happened.
Fellow comedians including Dawn French and Angela Barnes posted messages of support. Whitehouse, who is Welsh, is known for The Fast Show and the BBC Two series Gone Fishing with Bob Mortimer, and has been cast as Argus Filch in HBO's forthcoming Harry Potter series, the BBC reported.
