Trysten Mullis, who was 13 when he found his mother fatally injured with a corn rake on the family's Iowa farm in 2018, is campaigning to overturn his father's murder conviction, CBS News' 48 Hours reports.
Prosecutors argued that Todd Mullis attacked his wife, Amy, in a shed, citing her injuries, internet searches found on his iPad and a troubled marriage. He denied killing her. His trial lawyer told the jury she had been murdered, but not by his client, and never argued it was an accident.
New lawyers hired a forensic pathologist and a biomechanical engineer, who concluded the death was accidental. After a six-day hearing, a judge took nearly 15 months to rule, refusing a new trial and finding he had been fairly tried with competent counsel. Amy Mullis's family backs the verdict; his lawyers plan to appeal.
