A Reform UK member of the Welsh Parliament has defended wearing smart glasses that display a scrolling script on their lenses while he speaks in the Senedd chamber. Jason O'Connell, who represents Pontypridd Cynon Merthyr and was elected in May, told BBC Wales that the device has greatly improved his confidence and lets him look up from his notes during debates.
He rejected the suggestion that it gives a misleading impression of speaking unaided, comparing it with colleagues reading from tablets, phones or paper. His glasses have no camera. Welsh Liberal Democrat leader Jane Dodds has called for smart glasses to be barred from the chamber until rules are agreed, and the presiding officer's office said a review of the technology is under way, with conclusions due shortly.
