Thailand's opposition leader Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut was targeted by a spyware attack, his People's Party said on Tuesday, CNA reports. He posted screenshots of a threat notification from Apple warning that his iPhone was the target of a mercenary spyware attempt aimed at him personally. Apple said similar alerts had gone to users in 110 countries and did not name those responsible.
A government spokesman rejected a suggestion that the Thai state could be behind the surveillance attempt. A party spokesperson said Natthaphong was the only member to receive the alert this time, though other lawmakers and staff had received similar warnings under the previous military-backed government. In 2022 a cybersecurity watchdog reported that dozens of Thai pro-democracy activists had been targeted with Pegasus, spyware made by Israel's NSO Group. The progressive party finished runner-up at the general election in February.
