Update: Awka diocese threatens to quit Church of Nigeria over Ibezim suspension

·

The board of the Anglican Diocese of Awka has threatened to leave the Church of Nigeria and stay with the Church of England unless action against its archbishop, Alexander Ibezim, is dropped, Premium Times reports via allAfrica.

The primate, Henry Ndukuba, suspended Ibezim for six months to allow investigations into allegations including the sale of church land for N2 billion, and appointed the Bishop of Aguata, Samuel Ezeofor, to supervise the diocese. In a communiqué after an emergency meeting on 16 October, the board rejected both decisions and urged church leaders to respect pending court cases, including one Ibezim has brought against his suspension.

The threat is notable because the Church of Nigeria announced its own break from the Church of England last year after Sarah Mullally was named Archbishop of Canterbury.
