The independent MP for Indi, Helen Haines, is in a critical condition after she was hit by a vehicle outside her office in Wangaratta, in regional Victoria, The Guardian reports. Victoria Police said a 43-year-old man from nearby Tarrawingee was in custody and that a knife had allegedly been found in his car. Police said he was detained by a passer-by as he got out of the vehicle, a white Toyota LandCruiser.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the motive was not known and that the Australian Federal Police, ASIO and the joint counter-terrorism taskforce were investigating. Haines, 65, was airlifted to hospital in Melbourne. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said reports of threats and harassment against high office holders had risen from 951 to 1,067 between the two most recent reporting years.
