Benjamin Netanyahu has been accused by opponents of trying to delegitimise Tuesday's election after he and his Likud party claimed Arab Israeli parties used foreign money and vote buying to "steal" the vote, The Guardian reports.
Netanyahu's coalition lost its majority in the poll, leaving the Arab-led Joint List and Ra'am holding the balance of power. Likud has urged the Shin Bet security service to investigate alleged irregularities in Arab communities and said no Zionist party should work with the two parties. Neither Netanyahu nor his allies have made public any evidence for the claims.
Opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot said Likud had launched a coordinated campaign against the result, and Joint List leader Yousef Jabareen accused the prime minister of incitement. According to The Guardian, police officers and election committee members distanced themselves from the allegations, and the president rebuked Netanyahu for tarnishing an entire community.
