Update: Singapore denies power cut caused Woodlands causeway jam

·

Singapore's Immigration and Checkpoints Authority has disputed claims that an electricity failure at Woodlands Checkpoint was behind Wednesday's long traffic jams on the causeway and roads in Johor Bahru, the South China Morning Post reports. Malaysian newspaper The Star had attributed the congestion, which it said began around midday, to a major power failure at the checkpoint.

In its own account released on Thursday, the authority said Singapore-bound traffic built up while planned electrical maintenance was under way at one checkpoint, and that two vehicles breaking down on the Johor side then made queues to stretch back into Malaysia. It said truck clearance at Woodlands continued during the maintenance work. The causeway linking Johor and Singapore is one of the world's busiest land crossings, used daily by large numbers of commuters and goods vehicles.
