Zimbabwe's governing Zanu-PF has backed President Emmerson Mnangagwa to remain its leader after 2028, Africanews reports. The endorsement came on Sunday at a party gathering in Chinhoyi, as the 84-year-old tries to lengthen his rule.
In July, Mnangagwa signed constitutional changes lengthening presidential terms from five to seven years, moving the next election from 2028 to 2030 and replacing a direct presidential vote with a vote in parliament. Opposition politicians, civil society groups and human rights organisations have criticised the changes. Within the party, one faction wants him to stay until 2030, while another is preparing the way for Constantino Chiwenga, the former army general who helped remove Robert Mugabe in 2017.
