Wellington flood victims seek government help six months after April deluge

·

Wellington homeowners whose properties were wrecked by flash floods in April say they feel abandoned and are calling on central government for more financial help, 1News reports.

A record 77mm of rain fell in an hour in parts of the capital, causing floods and landslips that displaced hundreds of people and killed one person. About 40 properties were left uninhabitable. Residents want support similar to the co-funded risk assessments, buyouts and mitigation help offered in Auckland after the 2023 floods. Some are still trying to fund repairs such as collapsed retaining walls. Wellington's mayor, Andrew Little, said the council had been given a clear signal early on that the government would not take part in a buyout scheme.
