Tim Winton’s Cloudstreet voted Australia’s favourite book in ABC poll

·

Cloudstreet, Tim Winton's 1991 novel about two working-class families sharing a rambling house in postwar Perth, has topped an ABC Radio National poll of readers' 100 favourite Australian books.

Markus Zusak's The Book Thief came second and Trent Dalton's Boy Swallows Universe third, The Guardian reports. Winton's book, which won the Miles Franklin award in 1992, also led earlier polls of authors and the public in 2003. The final list ranged across fiction, non-fiction, children's books, history and cookery, with a children's birthday cake book at number 22. Helen Garner, Peter Carey and Hannah Kent were among writers with several titles. The oldest entry dates from 1874 and the newest from 2025.
