Ukrainian forces killed more than 100 Russian soldiers and captured over 30 in an operation that used underground gas pipelines near Kupiansk in Kharkiv region, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Tuesday, according to the Kyiv Independent.
He said the operation, code-named Veles, involved an advance of more than 15 kilometres underground and was carried out by the National Guard's 2nd Khartiia Corps with other units. Zelensky said Russian troops had earlier tried the same tactic against Ukrainian positions, and that Ukraine had adapted it and made it more technologically advanced.
The corps first reported on 22 October that its troops had reached Russian rear positions through the pipelines. In September, the monitoring group DeepState said Russian forces had used a gas pipeline to cross the Oskil river near Kupiansk. The casualty figures have not been independently verified.
