Utah prosecutor says DNA links Ted Bundy to another teenager’s 1974 murder

·

New DNA testing has linked the serial killer Ted Bundy to the 1974 murder of another teenager in Utah, a prosecutor said on Tuesday, according to an Associated Press report carried by ABC News.

The Summit County sheriff and county attorney held a news conference to set out the investigation and their decision to close the case. The victim had not been officially named before the briefing, though the death of 17-year-old Melissa Ann Smith that year has long been listed as an unsolved case.

Bundy killed at least 30 women and girls across several states in the 1970s and was executed in Florida in 1989 for two murders at a Florida State University sorority house. Advances in DNA testing continue to add to the list of his confirmed victims. In April, Utah authorities said he had killed Laura Ann Aime, 17, who vanished on Halloween in 1974.
