Mitchell Starc took six wickets for 72 as Australia fought back to bowl South Africa out for 329 on the first day of the third Test at Newlands in Cape Town, Daily Maverick reports.
South Africa's openers, Marques Ackerman and Aiden Markram, put on 158 before the home side lost their way after lunch, slipping to 232 for six soon after tea. Ackerman made 95 from 94 balls and Markram 78, with half-centuries from David Bedingham and Marco Jansen, but no batter went on to a big hundred.
Starc took three wickets in four balls with the second new ball late in the day to finish off the lower order, and the off-spinner Nathan Lyon claimed two. The captain, Pat Cummins, went wicketless for a third consecutive innings, his worst run in Test cricket. The paper says Australia hold a slight edge going into the second day.
