3-D ‘digital twins’ of Shackleton’s and Scott’s last ships to go on show in Ottawa

·

Detailed 3-D replicas of the wrecks of Sir Ernest Shackleton's ship Quest and Captain Robert Falcon Scott's Terra Nova are to be unveiled on Wednesday at the Royal Canadian Geographical Society's headquarters in Ottawa, The Globe and Mail reports. The so-called digital twins were built by combining tens of thousands of images taken on the seabed during an expedition this summer, using photogrammetry from Voyis Imaging of Waterloo, Ontario.

The society found Quest, on which Shackleton died in 1922, in 2024 at a depth of 390 metres off Newfoundland and Labrador. The expedition then surveyed Terra Nova off Greenland, where the Dundee-built ship was scuttled in 1943 after being damaged while carrying wartime supplies. The models will later be offered to schools across Canada.
