Uber starts rides in Tulum and Playa del Carmen

·

Uber began offering rides in Tulum and Playa del Carmen on 20 October, extending its service in Mexico's Quintana Roo state beyond Cancún and Chetumal, Mexico News Daily reports, citing Uno TV and Excélsior.

The company launched with introductory offers including free trips. A Tulum shopkeeper told Uno TV the competition was welcome, saying a short taxi ride to the archaeological site costs 150 to 200 pesos, against 60 to 80 pesos on apps such as DiDi, which already operate in the area. A taxi driver from a local union told Excélsior that drivers were already short of passengers and feared losing more work.

Uber is also preparing to add Uber Taxi and its low-cost Uber Moto motorcycle service in both towns, as it does in Cancún, and has opened driver registration. It won the right to operate in Quintana Roo three years ago.
