Norway's National Security Authority (NSM) says cyberattacks that succeeded in breaching Norwegian organisations were three times as common this year as last, The Local Norway reports.
Presenting its first public assessment of such risks on Tuesday, the agency's director, Arne Christian Haugstøyl, said several of the attacks had serious consequences and still posed a risk to national security. He cited the case of Lørenskog, a municipality near Oslo, which had a large amount of data stolen in the spring and put up for sale on the dark web.
Haugstøyl said artificial intelligence was giving attackers a powerful new tool for exploiting stolen data on a larger scale. The NSM did not name anyone behind the attacks, but its report follows claims by several European countries that Russia is running a hybrid warfare campaign linked to the war in Ukraine. It rates the national cyber risk as heightened.
