About 150 scientists, MPs and campaigners, among them Greta Thunberg, have written to the prime minister, Andy Burnham, calling for a national inquiry into why poorer and minority-ethnic communities in England breathe dirtier air, the Guardian reports.
The letter cites Institute for Fiscal Studies research showing that lower-income areas have consistently higher pollution, and that minority-ethnic groups are exposed to levels roughly 6% above those faced by white people. It argues the UK has no dedicated way of tackling these health inequalities.
Separate freedom of information figures gathered by the campaign group Mums for Lungs suggest more than 200,000 children in 11 English cities and areas were taken to hospital with breathing problems in 2025. Government data also shows parts of London, Glasgow and Bristol still exceeded legal pollution limits last year.
