Assam to seek CBI inquiry into deadly floods and sack officials found in polygamy

·

The government of the Indian state of Assam will ask the central government for an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the cause of this year's severe floods in Sivasagar and Charaideo districts, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday, The Hindu reports. He said a letter would go to the Centre within ten days, though the final decision rests with it.

The Dikhow River flooded parts of eastern Assam a few months ago, and at least 108 people died in floods across the state this year. The cabinet also approved a change to service rules so that any government employee found to be in a polygamous marriage, whatever their religion, will be dismissed and barred from future state jobs. The state assembly passed a Uniform Civil Code bill in May, which is awaiting presidential assent.
