Austrian MEP targeted by nude deepfakes urges EU to enforce app ban

·

Lena Schilling, an Austrian Green member of the European Parliament, has described finding AI-altered nude images of herself online, made from photographs taken at one of her first press conferences.

A Berlin-based thinktank, Agora Digitale Transformation, which alerted her to the images, reports that 50 MEPs have been targeted by sexualised deepfakes, 46 of them women, or roughly one in six female members.

Schilling called the images a form of digital violence against women and warned that such abuse could drive women out of public life. She and the German Green MEP Terry Reintke led a letter, signed by 119 MEPs, asking the EU to make sure a ban on so-called nudifier apps, due to take effect on 2 December, is backed by real enforcement and closes loopholes in member states.
