Calgary officials want an extra $16.6 million in the city's next four-year budget to plan possible extensions to the Green Line light rail project, Global News reports. About $12.4 million would go on studying a northern leg from Eau Claire to 160 Avenue N, a two-year piece of work, and around $4.1 million on a south-east extension from Shepard to Seton.
Rough estimates put the south extension at $3 billion and a northern section to 40 Avenue N at $4 billion. The first phase, running from Shepard to the Beltline, is under construction at a cost of $6.2 billion and is due to open in 2031. Mayor Jeromy Farkas said the figures would help the city press the provincial and federal governments for money. Council will decide on the study funding later this month.
