With the Democratic Alliance leading the Nelson Mandela Bay count on about 41 per cent after most ballots were captured, Eastern Cape DA leader Andrew Whitfield said the party would negotiate coalitions but would not govern with the EFF or MK. The ANC was on about 27.5 per cent and the EFF on 5.3 per cent, while the SACP, running alone for the first time, had around 4 per cent. Whitfield said any deal must put service delivery and stability ahead of jobs for politicians, citing unstable coalitions since 2016. EFF mayoral candidate Sinawo Tambo said his party would use its leverage if the DA cannot assemble a majority without it. Final results are due at the weekend.
