Early in-person voting in Alaska's general election began on Monday, even though most state offices were closed for Alaska Day, the Alaska Beacon reports.
Polling places opened in Anchorage at Midtown Mall and City Hall, as well as in Eagle River, Fairbanks, Juneau, Kenai, Nome, Palmer and Wasilla, and dozens of in-person absentee sites also opened statewide. All ballots must be cast by Election Day on 3 November.
Officials stress the difference between the two options: early voters have their identity checked before voting, so their ballot is guaranteed to count, whereas absentee ballots are checked only on arrival and can be rejected with no chance to fix mistakes. Postal ballots sent from within the US must arrive within 10 days of Election Day, or 15 days from abroad, to be counted.
