Experts warn Estonia’s plan to register AI agents could weaken security

·

Estonia's draft law to let people register AI agents acting on their behalf has drawn heavy criticism from experts, ERR News reports.

Economy minister Liina Vahtras says the bill would let individuals register an "agent code" so public and private systems can tell when software, rather than the person, is acting. Initially only private individuals could register, with one agent each.

Cybernetica, which helped build Estonia's e-government systems, called the draft deficient and contradictory and said passing it unchanged would be dangerous, warning that registration means little without authentication as strong as ID cards or Smart-ID. The tech industry association ITL, legal experts and the data protection regulator also raised concerns, and no ministry approved the bill by the deadline. Vahtras said she would not abandon the work.
