A well-known man has lost a high court attempt to stop The Guardian and ITN publishing allegations of inappropriate sexual behaviour towards young women, which he denies, The Guardian reports. The man, identified in court only as PPT, argued under human rights law that publication would put his life at risk, and his lawyers said he had twice tried to take his own life since being approached in May.
Mr Justice Nicklin accepted that publication would substantially increase the risk of suicide. However, he ruled that protecting the claimant was a matter for the health services, noting that he is detained under the Mental Health Act and that the hospital treating him is responsible for his safety. The judge said he had to weigh the man's rights against the media organisations' freedom of expression. A further claim relating to his relationship with his son was also considered.
