Irish consent video telling grandparents to ask before hugging is pulled after backlash

·

A short video suggesting that grandparents should check before hugging their grandchildren has been withdrawn in Ireland after a public outcry, GB News reports. The clip, made by the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre for its We-Consent programme, showed a teenage girl recoiling as her grandparents greeted her.

Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan called the video inappropriate and demeaning to grandparents and said it did not reflect the government's views. His department, which funds the programme, said the videos were made cheaply with volunteers by the charity and were not a government advertising campaign.

The centre said the clip was meant to teach respect for personal boundaries from an early age, but it has taken its videos off social media while it considers whether they are working as intended. Politicians including former justice minister Alan Shatter had criticised the clip.
