French President Emmanuel Macron has turned down an offer by his interior minister, Laurent Nuñez, to step down after days of violent protests across France, the Norwegian broadcaster NRK reports, citing the AFP news agency.
According to the president's office, Nuñez asked on Sunday to leave his post in light of the scale of the unrest. The Élysée said Macron refused because the police and security forces needed stable leadership in the current situation.
Macron also criticised what he described as failures that allowed the violence to take place. He has asked Nuñez to take every necessary step to establish openly what went wrong, given that the disorder was not prevented, and to draw up new working methods for the police and security forces.
