Norway's government has proposed national reading lists for Norwegian lessons in schools, ranging from Henrik Ibsen to the rap group Karpe, public broadcaster NRK reports.
Education Minister Kari Nessa Nordtun of the Labour Party said the texts are guidance only and teachers can add or remove works as they wish. She said the aim is to restore shared content across schools, which currently varies by region, and that a common list helps build a shared history and identity. Teachers had asked for more support, she added.
Eirik Vassenden, a professor of Nordic literature at the University of Bergen, criticised the selection, saying many of the texts are not good literature and that choosing them should be left to teachers.
Pupils at a school in Haugesund told NRK they knew few of the works but mostly welcomed a common list.
