Trial opens for four teens accused of machete murder of US student Kyle Whorrall in Auckland

·

Four young people went on trial in the High Court at Auckland on Monday accused of murdering Kyle Whorrall, a 33-year-old American PhD student, and robbing him at a Meadowbank bus stop in April 2025, the NZ Herald reports.

Prosecutors told the jury that five teenagers in a black SUV drove past Whorrall several times before at least two got out armed with a machete, struck him on the head and took his wallet. He died from his injuries. The defendants, now aged 18 and 19, have name suppression. The court heard for the first time that a fifth teenager has pleaded guilty to murder and aggravated robbery.

The Crown argues all four share responsibility through a joint plan to rob. Defence lawyers said prosecutors could not yet say who had used the machete.
