Update: Chinese student expelled from Moscow university over rising sun flag

·

A Chinese student who draped a Japanese rising sun flag around himself during a class at Moscow State University has been expelled and told to leave Russia, the South China Morning Post reports, citing the state-run Global Times newspaper.

The university is said to have taken the decision after the student was condemned by the People's Daily, the Communist Party's main newspaper, and by China's People's Liberation Army, which accused him of glorifying Japanese militarism. A petition against him had also circulated.

Japan's armed forces flew the flag as the empire expanded, and the country's Maritime Self-Defence Force still uses it today. In China and other parts of Asia it remains widely seen as a symbol of Japanese wartime aggression. The expulsion follows official Chinese criticism of the student in recent days.
