Police in Nigeria's Enugu State have confirmed that officers from an anti-cultism unit shot the entertainer Izuchukwu Nnaji, known as Stone, during a raid, Premium Times reports. His death had sparked protests by hundreds of young people on Thursday.
Police spokesman Daniel Ndukwe said officers raided The Bull Hotel in Enugu early on Wednesday after a tip-off about a suspected drug dealer and cult member, arresting him and nine others. He said Nnaji and another man jumped from a window, then struggled with a pursuing officer, and the gun went off during the struggle. Nnaji later died in hospital.
Enugu's police commissioner, Bitrus Giwa, has ordered a thorough investigation into whether the operation and the use of firearms followed the law and operational standards, and police have called for calm.
