Washington has told Javier Milei's government it is worried that an Argentine bill tightening sanctions on those exploiting Falkland Islands resources could catch US businesses, according to MercoPress, citing a report in Clarín based on unnamed US officials.
The bill would extend penalties beyond companies working in the islands to their affiliates, shareholders, suppliers and financial intermediaries. Clarín reported that the US would prefer the bill to be frozen, or failing that amended to exclude American companies. Neither government has commented publicly.
The 133-article bill failed to win committee approval in Argentina's Chamber of Deputies last week. Britain announced measures on Tuesday to shield UK firms from having to comply with Argentine sanctions. Senior US diplomats are due in Buenos Aires and Asunción from 19 to 26 October.
