Disadvantaged white pupils are the group most likely to finish school at 16 and not move into a job, apprenticeship or further education, according to analysis of Department for Education figures by the charity Nacro, GB News reports.
More than one in five disadvantaged white boys, 21.3%, had no sustained destination after finishing school in the 2024/25 academic year, up four percentage points since 2018/19. The figure was 10.2% for black boys from similar backgrounds and 12.2% for Asian boys. For disadvantaged white girls it rose to 18.6%.
Nacro chief executive Enver Solomon said tens of thousands of young people were being failed by the system, and the charity called for more supported internships and pre-apprenticeships. Education Secretary Lucy Powell told The Telegraph she was on a personal mission to tackle the problem, pointing to new technical and vocational qualifications.
