The managing director of Nigeria's Rural Electrification Agency, Abba Aliyu, has warned that a proposed law creating a National Authority for Renewable Energy could cause regulatory uncertainty and deter private investment, Premium Times reports.
The Electricity Act amendment bill, sponsored by Afam Ogene, who chairs the House of Representatives committee on renewable energy, was advanced by the House on 15 October. It would move renewable energy duties now held by the regulator NERC, the REA and the Rural Electrification Fund to the new authority, and give it 40% of the fund each year.
Mr Ogene argues that a dedicated body would end overlapping roles. Mr Aliyu, in a right of reply sent to the newspaper, said the market was still adjusting to the 2023 Electricity Act, which let states regulate their own markets, and that another federal regulator could add disputes and costs.
