Funding cuts force WFP to stop food aid for half a million people in Gaza

·

The UN's World Food Programme has stopped providing food to more than half a million people a month in Gaza after its funding fell by more than half compared with 2025, The Guardian reports. Its director for Palestine, Shaun Hughes, warned that hunger is likely to worsen over the winter.

Over the summer the agency helped feed about 1.6 million people, three-quarters of the population, but since October it has reached about 1.1 million, with cuts to ration boxes, cash payments and community kitchens. It says it needs more than £300m over six months. Two-thirds of Gaza's population face crisis-level food insecurity and 200,000 are at emergency levels. A year after the ceasefire, reconstruction has not begun and about 80% of people are out of work, leaving most dependent on aid.
