Qatar warns energy shock from Iran war has yet to peak and opposes Hormuz tolls

·

Qatar's deputy prime minister, Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, has warned that the disruption to global energy markets caused by the US-Israeli war with Iran has not yet peaked, Al Jazeera reports. Speaking at the Global Security Forum in Doha on Monday, he said further effects on supplies, trade and growth could follow in the coming months.

He said Qatar had been surprised by Iranian strikes on its Ras Laffan industrial complex in March, which will take years to repair, but that contacts with Tehran had never stopped. He opposed charging ships fees to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, saying uncertainty there would hit consumers worldwide, and expressed hope that mediation by Qatar, Pakistan and Oman could bring an agreement between the US, Iran and other parties.
