ICC registrar urges EU to give clear guidance on US sanctions against the court

·

The International Criminal Court's registrar, Osvaldo Zavala Giler, has urged the European Commission to issue clear guidance quickly on how companies and charities should respond to US sanctions on the court, Politico Europe reports.

The Trump administration first targeted ICC prosecutors and judges in February 2025 and announced sanctions on the whole court on 9 October, due to take effect next April. Zavala Giler said the lack of clarity from Brussels was leaving firms and NGOs unsure whether to comply.

He said the court had spent months moving away from American technology providers and making its payments free of any US link, including asking staff to open European bank accounts. The court wants the EU to use its blocking statute, which would bar European firms from complying with the sanctions.
