The Kenai Peninsula Borough has adopted rules requiring a permit for cloud seeding and other weather modification on borough land, KTOO reports.
Assembly members approved the ordinance on Tuesday. Applicants must hold a commercial lease or land use permit and set out the chemicals and flares they plan to use, how often they will fly, and what they aim to achieve. Geoengineering is banned outright on land set aside for casual uses such as berry picking and skiing.
The move follows an operation about two months ago by the California firm Rainmaker Technology, which used drones to release silver iodide and produced a tiny amount of rain over the southern peninsula near Homer. Borough Mayor Peter Micciche says officials were misled about the project's scope; the company says it held all the necessary permits.
